Course Entry/Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) at Mount Kenya University

Candidates wishing to study for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MB ChB) shall have met either of the following minimum university entry requirements.

  1. For the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) holders, minimum university admission requirement is C+ (plus) and in addition, B (plain) in each of the following cluster subjects;

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics or Mathematics
• English or Kiswahili

  1. For Kenya advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) holders, a minimum of two principal passes in Biology, Chemistry and subsidiary pass in either Mathematics or Physics.
  2. For diploma holders in Medical Sciences, a minimum ‘O’ level Division II pass in KCE or C+ mean grade and a credit C+ in cluster subjects in KCSE, in addition to a three-year diploma with a minimum of a credit pass from a medical training institution recognized by the Board.
  3. For holders of any degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent qualifications from a recognized university subject to passing Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  4. Other qualifications deemed to be equivalent to those in paragraphs (a)-(d) above from institutions recognized by the different institution’s Senates
  5. Proficiency in English language

Duration of Study

The duration of the course shall not be less than 6 academic years and not more than twelve years.

Additional Info

  • Mount Kenya University Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme is accredited by Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council and East African Community Medical Boards/Councils.
  • The University has adequate infrastructure which includes state-of-the-art Science Laboratories and a modern Anatomy Laboratory/Funeral Home at Thika Level 5 Hospital. In addition it is in collaboration with Machakos Level 5 Hospital and other strategic partners.
  • All units in the MB ChB., programme shall be compulsory unless the School Board recommends exemption and Senate approves.
  • The academic year in the Medical School shall be divided into 3 terms, with a minimum of 44 weeks. Each term shall be 14 or 15 weeks exclusive of any examinations.

    • Ksh.2,000 (Post-Graduate programmes) for East African applicants
    • US Dollars 50 for all non-East African applicants.
